NORTH consumers have been urged to demand receipts from traders and not walk away from a purchase without proof of it.
The Consumer Council said there was a rise in complaints about traders failing to furnish consumers with receipts.
Council chief executive officer Premila Kumar confirmed receiving as many as 30 complaints from consumers who were not given receipts.
"Traders on the other hand have said that the consumer did not ask for a receipt," she said. "Even if a consumer doesn't ask for it for goods above $10 the trader must give the receipt."
The right to be issued a receipt is guaranteed under the Sales of Goods Act and the Fair Trading Decree.
Ms Kumar said complaints were also against landlords not issuing receipts to tenants.
, drapery, footwear, up[holster and furniture as well as other shops too," she said.
"Huge concerns on this were also raised during the council's recent outreach programs for the north.
"The primary purpose of the receipt is to indicate that payments have been made and as such to give the payer evidence to reject any demands for payments for the same product or performance.
"It also facilitates complaints of defects and the exchange or return of goods."
