- Remembrance Day

- At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, Remembrance Day was written into history. It was the day 'The Armistice' was signed to mark the end of the Great War, 1914-1918. Our soldiers were among the brave who fought for world peace. Like all its allies, Fiji marks the momentous occasion every year. - THE Bula Festival will be held from July 11 to 18. Seven contestants will take part in the carnival. Festival organising committee president Mohammed Hafiz said this year's festival would liven the town up especially when many families were still struggling to recover from the January floods. - Shangri-Las Fijian Resort and Spa flew in two Bangkok chefs and tea masters when the hotel hosted industry partners to a Chinese banquet last Thursday at Nadis Restaurant 88. The Namaka eatery was a hive of activity as guests were taken on a cultural journey of international flavour and cuisine. The event was part of the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange and attended by visiting journalists and buyers.

- STUDENTS of Veiuto Primary School marked Children's Day last week by exploring the roles of the media and how it is a channel through which their voices can be heard. This was organised in recognition of this year's Children's Day theme, 'Media: Voice for all children'. Fiji Media Watch representative Violet Savu was the guest speaker who raised awareness on the issue. She spoke on how children could ensure their voices and messages are heard by taking advantage of the media programmes tailored for young people.

- THE new generation 3G mobile network introduced by Vodafone Fiji was received with open arms at the launch last Thursday. Nadi Town Council special administrator Aisea Tuidraki hailed the introduction of the wireless mobile broadband technology. He commended Vodafone for sticking to its promised April timeline of providing the service to the Western Division. The launch was well attended by the business community as aside from a chance to mingle and unwind, it was an opportunity to get first-hand information on the intelligent and empowering capabilities of the new generation 3G.

- Post Fiji has adopted e-commerce and will soon be trading online. Last week it launched its new e-commerce options on its revamped website. Company chief executive Joape Kunikoro said they were committed to keeping abreast with technological advancements in order to serve its customers well. The website is still in phase one and whilst features such as postage calculations can now easily be done online, major components such as online purchasing, and online tracking of registered post items and courier consignments being delivered through EMS will be phased in soon.

- THE Yellow Ribbon Project 2009 was launched at the Suva Civic Auditorium by interim Provincial Development Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau last week. This year the project will focus on raising awareness among the business sector on the project and how they can assist in making the project a success. At the launch were members of the business sector, ex-inmates, Fiji Prison and Corrections Service officers and members of the various non-governmental organisations. The official launch was followed by lunch at the lower Civic Centre.
